Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
এই বৃক্ষরাজি কার মনে হয় আমি জানি;
যদিও গ্রামের ভেতরে কোথাও তার বাড়ি খানি;
সে দেখবে না আমি এখানে থেকে দাঁড়িয়েছি
দেখছি তুষারে ভরে যেতে তার অরণ্যখানি।
আমার ছোট্ট ঘোড়া নিশ্চয়ই একটিকে অদ্ভুত ভাবছে
খামার বাড়ি নিকটে নেই তবু কেন থামা এইখানে
যেখানে শুধু বন আর জমে যাওয়া হ্রদের মাঝে
বছরের সবচেয়ে অন্ধকারময় সন্ধ্যা আসে ঘনিয়ে
তার জানতে চায় কোনো ভুল হলো কি।
আর শুধু হালকা বাতাসের চলার গতির
এবং নরম তুষার ঝড়ে পড়ার শব্দ শুনি।
মনোরম, গভীর আর ঘন এই বন,
কিন্তু আমাকে যে অঙ্গীকার করতেই হবে পূরণ,
আর ঘুমিয়ে পড়ার আগে যেতে হবে বহুদূর,
আর ঘুমিয়ে পড়ার আগে যেতে হবে বহুদূর।
The Theme : The central theme of the above poem is ‘duty and death’. The poem suggests that death is inevitable to all but before our death, we should fulfill our noble deeds. The speaker of the poem is brooding over death. But immediately, he shakes off pessimistic thoughts and begins to remember that he has many noble deeds to do before his death.
(উপারিউক্ত কবিতাটির মূল বিষয়বস্তু হচ্ছে “কর্তব্য এবং মৃত্যু”। কবিতায় উঠে এসেছে যে মৃত্যু সকলের জন্যই অনিবার্য কিন্তু আমাদের উচিত মৃত্যুর পূর্বেই আমাদের মহৎ কার্যাবলি সম্পন্ন করে যাওয়া। কবিতায় বক্তা মৃত্যু নিয়ে গভীরভাবে ভাবছেন। আবার, একই সাথে তিনি হতাশাপূর্ণ চিন্তা-ভাবনা ঝেড়ে ফেলেন আর স্মরণ করতে থাকেন যে মৃত্যুর পূর্বে তার অনেকগুলো মহৎ কাজ করার আছে।)
